Tale of the Timeless Craft

The art of carpet making was introduced in India around the 16th century by the Mughal ruler, Akbar, who brought Persian weavers to establish what would go on to become one of the finest creations of the nation. Over time, the art of carpet-making has made its way to different parts of India, where the distinct imprints of geography added uniqueness and variety to the products. The weaving styles, textures, and patterns vary based on these regions. Handwoven Panja Dhurrie from the state of Rajasthan, for example, is embodied by vivid colors often made of cotton or wool, adorned with geometric and floral patterns. Kashmiri Namda rugs, contrastingly, are mostly made of felted wool with stunning “aari” work embroidered on them. The major production clusters in India lie in Uttar Pradesh (Bhadohi Mirzapur), Rajasthan (Jaipur Bikaner), Haryana (Panipat), and Jammu & Kashmir.

This craft is often labor intensive and, in some cases, the artisans even acquire generational skills passed down to them that add to the layer of specialty. Today, there are more than 2 million artisans and weavers employed in this industry, primarily hailing from rural India with the majority being women. As of FY2023, the country’s carpet export market stood at worth USD 1.51 billion with the largest export destinations being the USA, Germany, and Canada and it continues to grow each year.
